Cash on Delivery in Nigeria: Selling Without Addresses

Navigating a market with no reliable postal system, high trust barriers and Lagos-centred logistics.

There is no usable national address system, and that is the design constraint

Nigeria's postal addressing is not reliable enough to route parcels. Postal codes are largely unused in practice, and street addressing is inconsistent even within major cities.

Couriers therefore work from descriptive directions and, above all, from the buyer's phone. The rider calls on approach and is guided in. This is not a workaround, it is the primary delivery mechanism, and it means a wrong or unreachable phone number is a failed delivery no matter how good the address text is.

Sellers should design for this rather than against it. Collecting a landmark and a reliably answered phone number matters more than collecting a formally correct address.

  • Treat the phone number as the delivery address, and verify it works
  • Collect a prominent nearby landmark rather than a postal code
  • Capture a second number, ideally on a different network
  • Confirm the buyer will be reachable during the delivery window

The trust barrier is why COD is not optional

Nigerian buyers have well-founded caution about paying online sellers in advance. Advance-fee fraud is a real and widely experienced phenomenon, and buyers behave accordingly.

The consequence is that COD is not simply a preference to be optimised away. For a new seller with no reputation it is close to a condition of entry, and pushing prepayment early tends to read as exactly the behaviour buyers have learned to avoid.

Reputation is the asset that eventually relaxes this. Visible reviews, a consistent presence and a reachable human all shorten the time before a buyer will consider paying up front, but the sequence runs in that order and cannot be skipped.

Lagos economics do not extend to the rest of the country

A very large share of Nigerian online commerce concentrates in Lagos, with Abuja and Port Harcourt behind it. Within Lagos, dispatch riders make delivery fast and reattempts cheap.

Outside those centres, interstate delivery takes longer, costs more and offers fewer courier options. A national flat delivery fee quietly means Lagos buyers subsidising everyone else, which is a choice worth making deliberately rather than by accident.

Long delivery cycles and moving prices

Where delivery takes several days, the price quoted at order time and the cost at delivery time can diverge, particularly for imported goods during periods of currency movement.

The seller has two workable options and one bad one. Holding the quoted price and absorbing the difference protects the relationship. Quoting a shorter validity window on the price sets expectations honestly. Changing the price when the rider is already at the door is the bad one, and it produces refusals and lasting reputational damage.

Payment on delivery increasingly means transfer, not cash

Nigerian pay-on-delivery is quietly shifting away from physical cash. Instant bank transfer is widely used, and many buyers now pay the rider by transfer at the door rather than handing over notes.

For sellers this is a meaningful improvement. It reduces cash handling, shortens the remittance path, and removes the situation where a buyer wants the item but does not have exact notes on hand.

It introduces a different failure mode, which is a transfer that has not cleared while the rider is waiting. Agreeing in advance with your courier how that case is handled, and telling the buyer to have the transfer ready, prevents an argument at the door.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do couriers deliver without proper addresses? By phone. The rider calls on approach and is directed in, which makes a reachable phone number more important than the written address.

Can I ask Nigerian buyers to pay in advance? Eventually, but rarely at the start. Caution about advance payment is well founded, and pushing prepayment before you have a visible reputation tends to lose the sale.

Why is delivery outside Lagos so much more expensive? Because courier density and competition fall away quickly outside the main commercial centres, so interstate delivery costs more, takes longer and has fewer options.

What should I do if my costs rise before delivery? Either absorb the difference or quote a clear validity period on the price. Raising the price at the door reliably produces a refusal and damages your reputation.
