Cash on Delivery in Egypt: A Seller's Field Guide
Governorate routing, informal addresses and the Cairo density advantage.
In Egypt, the address is the hard part
Most Egyptian COD failures are not payment failures. They are addressing failures. A large share of buyers describe where they live rather than state a formal address, and the description assumes local knowledge the courier may not have.
An address that reads as a building beside a named cafe, above a pharmacy, in a district a courier has never worked is not a delivery instruction. It is a puzzle. The courier will attempt it once, phone the buyer, and if the phone is unanswered the parcel starts its way back to you.
- Confirm the governorate explicitly rather than inferring it from the city
- Ask for a nearby landmark in addition to the street, not instead of it
- Always capture a second contact number before dispatch
- Repeat the address back to the buyer in the conversation and have them correct it
Routing starts at the governorate, not the city
Egyptian carriers organise coverage and pricing by governorate. Cairo, Giza and Alexandria behave like one operating environment, and the Delta, Upper Egypt and the coastal governorates behave like several others.
Carriers such as Bosta publish the specific city list they serve, and the name you send has to match that list rather than the colloquial name a buyer uses. A parcel addressed to a neighbourhood name that the carrier does not recognise as a city will be rejected at booking or misrouted afterwards.
The fix is unglamorous: normalise the buyer's stated location to the carrier's own vocabulary at the point of confirmation, while you still have the buyer's attention.
Cairo density is an advantage you should price in
Greater Cairo concentrates an unusually large share of Egyptian online demand into a small area. That density makes reattempts cheap, same-day and next-day delivery realistic, and failed deliveries recoverable rather than fatal.
Outside that corridor the economics invert. A failed delivery in Upper Egypt costs the outbound leg, the return leg and days of cash-cycle delay on a single order that earned nothing.
Sellers who treat these as one market end up with a national delivery promise they can only keep in Cairo, and a return rate they cannot explain.
Confirmation in Egyptian Arabic, at Egyptian hours
Egyptian buyers write in Egyptian Arabic, and they message late. Order volume skews heavily towards the evening and night, and it shifts again during Ramadan, when both browsing and delivery windows move.
A confirmation flow that only operates during office hours misses the moment when intent is highest. The gap between an order placed at midnight and a reply at ten the next morning is where most abandoned COD orders are actually lost.
Know how many attempts your carrier actually makes
Egyptian carriers differ in how many delivery attempts they make before returning a parcel, and sellers frequently do not know the number for their own carrier. It is one of the most consequential terms in the contract and one of the least examined.
A carrier making a single attempt turns every unanswered phone call into a return. A carrier making two or three gives you a window in which a quick message to the buyer can rescue the order. That window only helps if you know the parcel failed while it is still open, which means acting on the first failure notice rather than on the return.
Ask for the attempt count, the interval between attempts, and how quickly failures are reported to you. Those three numbers determine how much of your return rate is genuinely recoverable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do so many Egyptian COD orders fail on delivery? Usually because of address quality rather than buyer intent. Informal, landmark-based addresses are common, and a courier who cannot resolve one makes a single attempt before returning the parcel.
Which carrier should I use for cash on delivery in Egypt? Bosta is a common choice for national coverage, and several regional couriers compete on price in specific governorates. Whichever you pick, send city names that match the carrier's own published list.
Do I need to route by governorate? Yes. Egyptian carrier coverage and pricing are organised by governorate, so confirming it explicitly prevents both misrouting and surprise fees.
Does Ramadan change COD operations? It changes them significantly. Ordering patterns, active hours and realistic delivery windows all shift, so both your confirmation timing and your delivery promise should shift with them.
